October is just around the corner, and while many individuals may be gearing up for a fantastic spooky season, the FearLess Dallas community is partnering with Bella Bra Shop to not only bring awareness about breast cancer and its impact on the community, but to provide an opportunity for women+ to receive necessary resources in the process. In today’s blog, your Dallas, TX community discusses the importance of breast cancer awareness and its influence on society, as well as provides resources to help.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Whether you are aware of it or not, October first through the 31st is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! It is an annual health campaign organized by a host of major breast cancer charities in order to increase awareness regarding the disease, as well as raise funds for research regarding the cause, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention. Currently, there are more than 3.8 million women that have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the United states, and breast cancer in men is rare but is largely overlooked. In fact, roughly one out of every 100 breast cancer diagnoses are found in men.
Additionally, breast cancer is considered to be the second most common cancer, surpassing lung cancer and only falling behind certain types of skin cancer. There are numerous ways in which the disease affects the body, and depending on how or where it has spread, the outcomes can vary significantly.
As a community serving women+, it is our duty to stay informed and do what we can to support the cause. To learn more information about Breast Cancer Awareness Month and individuals who are affected, contact our team today.
Screening and Early Detection
While there are no natural cures for breast cancer, research has shown that early intervention through medical care is necessary for removing, shrinking, and slowing the growth of tumors. Moreover, the sooner the issue is identified, the better the chances may be of treating it, depending on how the disease has spread.
To help detect cancer at an early stage, it is important to attend your breast cancer screenings. A screening mammogram uses x-rays to create images of the breast area in order to identify cancer within individuals. It is recommended that you first speak to your primary care physician to determine if a test is right for you, and mammograms are typically recommended once a year starting at the age of 40 years old. It is also important to begin clinical breast exams at least every three years starting at the age of 20. Contact our community to learn more.
